Gelato, Sorbet, and No Wait.
A recurring trend is being seen in Auckland – late-night ice-cream snacks. A recent move by Movenpick to open a new Takapuna branch motivated me to ingest calories, and subsequently work them off whilst walking along Mission Bay.
A warm summer’s eve greeted us upon leaving the car after our East Tamaki Drive travels.
Pleasant.
A crowd had gathered outside our destination, intrigued we approached with caution; wary as to the cause of such commotion – possible terrorist attack, or even worse, gypsies. A closer inspection revealed the ‘crowd’ to be actually a crudely-formed line leading into Movenpick.
Not interested in spending 3 bazillion hours in a queue, I had an epiphany: what if we didn’t get ice cream from this madhouse, and perhaps purchased our frozen treats from an independent vendor: it was crazy – but it might just work. And it did pay off.
Gelato and Sorbet - a mere 6.5 meters from the mass of people hemorrhaging from Movenpick - offers delightful sorbet and gelato (as the name would suggest). Most excellent service was offered, the delightful gentleman behind the counter describing 2008 as an arrow (due to the supposed increase in the speed that time elapses) was accompanied by samples of product he thought we would like.
Made on the premises and from New Zealand produce, I cannot help but feel that we are missing out on produce that defines our nation. The sorbet and gelato were exquisite, and the proprietors of this establishment were extremely engrained in what they were doing – evident from the excitement on their face. Various, ever-changing flavors are on offer. I had taro.
Yes: TARO.
“Like eating frozen liquefied vanilla wine biscuits” - my attempt at describing the taste. It was also a delightful purple colour: very much in the ‘That’s So Raven’ style.
Parking in this area is ample and easily accessible, however often full. Driving around with a keen eye will render you with a space, however much concentration is needed. With the beach across the road and such a glorious mix of people, this is highly recommended - especially at this time of year.
